Great Scot!

The 44th Annual Scottish Games, held this Saturday at Boone Hall Plantation, features a day of Scottish events like piping and drumming competitions, Highland wrestling, a beer garden, and live music from Seven Nations and Castle Crossing. The highlight of the day may be the sheaf toss where a kilted man armed with a pitchfork tosses a burlap bag of straw over a horizontal bar. The caber toss also sounds promising — athletes chuck a large tapered pole, usually about 175 pounds and 19 feet long, so that it falls directly away from them. Skirt flashing is optional. “There are no events in Charleston that have a claim to being around for more than 44 years,” Ron Hayes, President of the Scottish Society of Charleston says, “In a lot of ways it may be the first International event held in Charleston every year since 1971.” Though the games are hosted to honor Scotland’s legacy, members of all cultures and heritages are welcome to attend.
