Capitalizing on their success in the Charleston Comedy Festival’s Stand-Up Competition, Charleston funny men (and competition winners) Dusty Slay, Jason Groce, and Tim Hoeckel, along with Cola-based Wayne Cousins, are taking the stage again at the Charleston Music Hall to provide us with their comedic observations and jokes. Hoeckel acts as the emcee for the first comedy night of the series, with a show taking over the Hall once a month. And proving Charleston’s growing comedy scene, the Hall will also play host to comedy heavyweights including Aziz Ansari (March 12), Mike Birbiglia (March 30), and Jeanne Robertson (May 17). The monthly series hopes to be a cornerstone in the Charleston comedy scene. “I love combining local, regional, and national programming in the Music Hall, and I want shows to be more about the quality of the show than about the marquee value,” says Charles Carmody of the Music Hall. “Yes, even I will be star struck when Aziz steps on the stage, but I think it is just as important to be supporting our local and regional stand-up comedians, as it is to be hosting the comics with the big names. We have an amazing little stand-up comedy scene in Charleston (many thanks to Theatre 99 and Dusty Slay) … I hope we can really establish a well-attended monthly [or] serial stand-up comedy event that in turn further cultivates, inspires, encourages the comics in Charleston and the surrounding area.”
