Charleston Green Fair Greenflix: The Botany of Desire

When: Sat., Sept. 26, 7:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $8/advance, $6/students
Michael Pollan’s book The Botany of Desire explores the world from a plant’s-eye view and casts man in the role of bumblebee, a simple evolutionary tool. Director Michael Schwarz brings the book to life in a documentary that takes viewers to the apple orchards of Kazakhstan and the tulip markets of Amsterdam. The movie will be screened at the Charleston Visitor’s Center Bus Shed as part of Charleston Green Fair, followed by the winners of the Charleston GreenFlix 60 Second Film Contest, a competition that rewards filmmakers for their relevance and creativity when it comes to tackling important environmental topics. Afterwards, film-goers can stay for a party in the Bus Shed, with food from The Sprout and Street Foods, music from DJ Matt Blaster, and a green garden provided by the Charleston Horticultural Society. The best part of the evening, of course, is the environmental stewardship of the event (which is co-produced by the City Paper). —Stephanie Barna
