Charleston Fine Art Annual

When: Nov. 4-7 2009

Between art walks, openings, and parties, the gallery scene is hot in Charleston, and the annual event that celebrates it all is the Charleston Fine Art Annual. The three-day festival features a series of events highlighting the artists that help make our visual arts community what it is.

Things kick off on Wednesday with the first in a series of Women in Art lectures at the Gibbes, sponsored in part by the Center for Women. The 6 p.m. lecture will explore John Singer Sargent’s women, and tickets are $20 or $10 for Gibbes or CFW members.

On Friday, there will be a free art stroll at Charleston Fine Art Dealers Association (CFADA) member galleries from 5-8 p.m. with works from local and visiting artists.

On Saturday starting at 9 a.m., you’ll have the rare chance to see artists at work at the Painting in the Park event in Washington Park. Featuring artists like Robert Lange, Amy Lind, Lyuba Titovets, John Doyle, West Fraser, Mark Horton, and Johnson Hagood, the event lasts until noon. Their creations will be auctioned off later that evening at the Charleston Art Auction at the Renaissance Charleston Hotel starting at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $50, and all proceeds will be donated to the Charleston County high school art programs. Both historically significant and contemporary paintings will be up for bid at the auction, too. Last year, CFADA raised over $18K for high school art programs. Let’s see if we can beat that this year. —Erica Jackson
