Charleston Dragon Boat Festival

When: Sat., May 8, 8:30 a.m. 2010
There are 63 teams participating in this year’s Dragon Boat Festival, and you can be one of the 3,000-plus spectators rooting for their favorite team and celebrating the fight against cancer. But wait. You may ask yourself, “Just what the heck is dragon boat racing?” We’ll tell you. Originating in ancient China, it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the world. About 20 paddlers sit side-by-side as they propel a 48-foot, racing a 250-meter course. The boats are a sight to see, adorned in bright colors. The paddlers are accompanied by one steer person and a drummer, who provides the rhythm of each stroke (the heartbeat of the dragon, per se). Dragon Boat Charleston, the city’s first ever dragon boat team, and Roper St. Francis Cancer Center are sponsoring this event to benefit cancer survivor wellness programs. The festival features a fun zone for kids, food vendors, and a merchandise tent. There will also be a cancer survivor ceremony starting at 1:30 p.m. —Christina Janke
