Charleston Dog Show

When: Sat., May 7, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 2011
Phone: (843) 849-8096
Price: Free, $10/entry fee per dog
I think I’m going to enter my roommate’s one-eared golden retriever Sammie into the Charleston Dog Show. I mean, he’s got one ear. That’ll totally get him the sympathy vote in the competition for the “rescue” class. On Saturday, Marion Square belongs to the canines as the event enters its eighth year. It opens with the “Blessing of the Dogs,” and the shows begin at 9 a.m. Classes in the competition include veterans/seniors (aged 7 and older), puppies (four months to one year), herding dogs, sporting dogs, terriers, hounds, working dogs, mutts, non-sporting dogs, toys, and more. There’s even a costume class, so maybe I’ll dress up Sammie like Vincent Van Gogh. Entry is $10 per class, but it’s free to come by and scope out all the pups. You can also enjoy a dog rescue village, vendors, microchipping services, a silent auction, obedience demonstrations, and more. The day benefits Low Country Golden Retriever Rescue Resource, Greyhound Pets of America-Charleston, Lowcountry Lab Rescue, and Middleton Place Hounds. Make sure you come out early: The puppies are up second. Cue the “awwwwwwwws.”
