Charleston Cup Steeplechase

When: Sun., Nov. 13, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 2011
Phone: (843) 766-6208
Price: $25
After an eight-year hiatus, the Charleston Cup is returning to the Lowcountry. The Plantation at Stono Ferry will host the celebrated horse race, which provides spectators with a variety of hoof-pounding excitement, including both flat and steeplechase races. While flat racing is known for being a speed-based contest, steeplechase boasts similar quickness while adding the risk of jumping to the mix. The races will run rain or shine, with no discounts made on account of bad weather, so be sure to pack your poncho. In addition to a full day of racing, the Cup also dubs itself the self-proclaimed “social event of the season,” and throngs of people from all walks of life will be in attendance. All-day tailgates begin early, around 9 a.m., and you can expect to see party favors ranging from Pabst to Cristal and burgers to lobster claws. With a record-breaking number of tickets already sold, organizers expect the crowd to reach upwards of 16,000.
