Charleston Burlesque Festival

When: Sat., May 28, 7 p.m. 2011
Price: $15/advance, $20/door
A lot gets said about Spoleto fashion. Just what should a woman wear to an opera or ballet performance? Probably not a corset and fishnet stockings. If that’s more your flavor, you’ll probably enjoy the Charleston Burlesque Festival. The Holy City’s own Dolly Dee curates the event, which will feature more than 20 dancers from New York City, Washington D.C., and elsewhere. Start the day with the Pretty Things Academy Workshop (at Just Shoot Me Photography, 1623-A Meeting Street Road), where you can learn some pin-up tips. At the main event at South of Broadway Theater, you’ll get to watch the dancers shake their stuff, plus see a belly-dancing show from the Mezmer Society and a fashion parade from Smolder boutique. The night ends with an after-party at the Mill with live music from the Straight 8s and the debut of the Burlesque Camera Club, which gives photographers the chance to snap the girls. Recover on Sunday with the Burly-Q-Brunch at the Tattooed Moose and a photoshoot at Lowcountry Harley Davidison.
