Charleston Artisan Cheesehouse is certainly filling a niche in our locally crafted artisan food community. They're currently making two cheeses: the Battery Park: Bloomy-Rind Cheese is a brie-style cheese with two internal textures and flavors, and the Wild Boar: Black Truffle Cheese is the same concept, but with a layer of delicious Oregon truffles inside. According to cheesemaker Jared Jones, what sets his cheese apart is a true artisan philosophy. Charleston Artisan cheeses are handmade from ingredients as local and wholesome as possible. Hickory Hill Milk (located beyond Columbia) has been in the same family for 250 years — or 20 generations of farmers. The cows spend 16 to 18 hours on the pasture per day. No hormones. No antibiotics. Un-homogenized, all-natural milk. You can pick up a wheel at Avondale Wine & Cheese or the Mt. Pleasant farmers market. —Alison Sher
