Chai’s hosts a rainbow of local color

Glam Slam

There are times when Charleston is so fabulous, we almost forget we’re in South Carolina. The fourth annual Local Color Fashion Show, hosted at Chai’s Lounge and Tapas, was one of those times. The runway show got off to a fashionably late start, but it didn’t matter — the booze was flowing and the staff at Chai’s shuffled through the thick crowd, offering tasty snacks. We couldn’t believe how many people showed up on a Sunday evening, but that all changed once the parade of couture started.

Rachel Gordon started the show with a lovely array of dresses in both floor- and cocktail-lengths. Next, Chelsie Ravenell kept the men entertained with colorful, classy pieces. And the models sporting Megan Waldrep’s collection looked edgy in sparkly skirts and vintage tees. The models each carried accessories that suited their looks, from surfboards for the men to exotic flowers for the ladies.

The second round brought a show from LulaKate, who wowed us with her elegant, simple frocks. A copper-colored dress with a fur wrap, in particular, caught our eye. Both Beth Pilger’s and Mamie Ruth’s collections were unique and surprising. Pilger’s clothing seemed fit for the most extravagant of life’s events, and Ruth’s exotic, bohemian ensembles were made for a trip around the world. Proceeds from this stylish event benefited Charleston Chefs Feed the Need.
