CBT gives benefactors the star treatment at Oscar Gala

Rolling Out the Red Carpet

Charleston Ballet Theatre and Charleston magazine teamed up for a fundraising gala Thursday night that brought the red carpet to King Street. Patrons were treated to the full glam experience starting with their arrival at the Black Box Theatre. Ayoka Lucas played Mary Hart, quizzing arriving guests on their ensembles.

Cameras filmed everyone entering the theater, and the live video was streamed to multiple televisions around the stage area, where the crowd sipped wine and awaited the dance portion of the evening. The Oscar-inspired interpretive dances were impressive, showing off the avant-garde choreography and talents of both the professional dancers and the youth company.

After getting properly jazzed up about the year’s nominees and the cultural contribution that the CBT makes to our city, it was time to cross the street en masse, stopping traffic, to get to the American Theater. Guests smiled and posed for fake and real paparazzi on the long red carpet and soaked up the spotlight.

A silent auction preceded the dinner, and bidding, dining, and champagne-sipping ensued while a pianist played softly in the background. Each table was elaborately decorated by some of Charleston’s most creative florists and event planners who were competing for best-of-show. Unique movie themes from past and present Academy Awards influenced the decor, like a giant Marie Antoinette holding a cake, and vials of fake blood and candles on the Dracula table.

Even chef Nico Romo added some Black Swan-esque drama to the entrée he served: local black striped bass with half of its dark skin starkly contrasting its delicate white flesh, over a pool of pale-red port wine beurre blanc.

The Have-Nots wrapped up the evening with comedic renditions of the dances performed earlier — their version of The Social Network was pure genius.
