Like any sport or activity you may encounter in life, getting good takes practice. In the realm of cast net and fly fishing, it takes a little more. In fact, it could be easily argued by anglers that even catching one fish takes lots of practice, and, of course, patience. Luckily, for those of us who weren't born with fishing rods in our hands, we get the opportunity to see the pros do it at this year's SEWE.

But while throwing a net may sound easier to those non-fishers than fishing on a rod, for those who've tried, it is no walk in the park.

Gene Adams, a local cast-net fisherman, will be giving demonstrations at this year's SEWE, as he has been doing for the past several years. Although he won't be catching fish, he'll explain the process step-by-step and show those eager to learn how to perfect their throwing technique.

Most cast nets run about four feet (eight feet opened up) to 12 feet, and are weighed down at about three-quarters of a pound per foot to anywhere near one-and-a-half pounds per foot, which is some pretty heavy lifting.

Shrimp are a common target for cast-netting in the Lowcountry, and are in season for 60 consecutive days starting around April or May.
