If there’s anything that movies and TV shows like Fame, Glee, and A Star is Born have taught us, it’s that talent needs a place to shine — preferably often, and preferably on stage. To give local performers that extra outlet, Theatre Charleston started their cabaret nights a while back, aiming them mainly at the local acting and theater community. Big turnouts and audience demand convinced the organization to start marketing them toward the general public, and “Under the Spotlight” is the result. “We have such amazing talent in our community [that we realized] these events shouldn’t be treated as an industry secret,” says Emily Wilhoit, executive director of Theatre Charleston. “Our actors wanted to share their talents with a wider audience and we felt patrons should have full access to these exciting events.” “Under the Spotlight” is focused on song, with participants performing solos and duets in the new Woolfe Street Playhouse. The Playhouse’s cabaret seating and in-house bar should offer the perfect atmosphere for the evening, Wilhoit says, and the late start time allows participants to watch or perform in one of the several plays happening that night. Consider it a theater nightcap.
