Businesses back penny tax hike

Support in advance of tough vote Nov. 2

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Trident Association of Realtors announced a campaign Monday in support of a penny sales tax increase for building and improving local schools. The Charleston County School District will ask voters to approve the tax on the November ballot.

Topping the list of projects, the district plans to replace five downtown schools that have been abandoned over the slim, but possible, chance of an earthquake. In lieu of the sales tax, the district would have to borrow the money to rebuild those schools and raise taxes to pay it back.

The six-year penny sales tax is expected to raise $450 million, with the balance of that money going to 17 other schools across the district.
