Burger Babies Urban Picnic was a fun yet sweaty affair

There are few times in your adult life when squirt guns are necessary. Given the heat wave and smoke from the roaring barbeque grill, Burger Babies’ Urban Picnic on Friday was one of those instances. Thankfully small water guns were cleverly placed throughout the graffiti-covered back-alley space behind the new King Street spot. An unexpected squirt of water wasn’t an annoyance so much as a relief.

Though we all longed to be inside in the air conditioning, we were happy to sweat it out at the fun and laid-back event. Guests sipped champagne or beer and munched on small but delicious burgers with shaved red onion, hydroponic bibb lettuce, tomatoes, and a special sauce that’s a play on the classic Big Mac sauce.

The event truly lived up to its “urban picnic” name thanks to its unique setting surrounded by downtown buildings. The area is small but makes room for a corn hole set and a picnic table, one side of which subsequently collapsed while a few people were sitting on it — though they all walked away uninjured and laughing. We set up camp near the large fan set up out back and chatted with the young and hip crowd as they funneled in and out all evening. Despite being drenched in sweat, it was clear that everyone was having a great time.
