While a sad percentage of contemporary country music “stars” are basically prefabricated entertainers singing and scootin’ the way their record labels have trained them to do, it’s encouraging to see individuals with genuine songwriting talent and technical proficiency succeed. Fortunately, Grammy Award-winner Brad Paisley is one of the good ones. Likeable and down to earth, he actually writes his songs, plays his own guitar solos, and means what he sings — without a whiff of arrogance or an air of putting on.

Paisley started playing guitar at the age of eight in West Virginia. As a teen prodigy, he played for six years at the annual Jamboree in the Hills in Wheeling. Out of college, he moved to Nashville, and quickly landed a publishing deal and a recording contract with Arista Nashville. His debut solo album, Who Needs Pictures, made a splash in 1999 with the chart-topping singles “He Didn’t Have to Be” and “We Danced.” Paisley headlines the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday evening behind his new album American Saturday Night — a well-polished mix of traditional country, sentimental love ballads, blues-rockers, and storytellin’ anthems on modern life in the U.S.A.

Supporting acts include Miranda Lambert (her latest album is called Revolution) and Justin Moore (his recent smash hit is “Small Town U.S.A.”). Tickets will be available at the box office, Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, and online at ticketmaster.com. —T. Ballard Lesemann
