Re: “Spring Roll

The staff is friendly, and for the quality of the food, the prices are unbelievable! Seriously gives Tasty Thai a run for its money... Not to mention the fact that if, like me, you eat dinner around midnight, Spring Rolls is down for the count every night of the week. I think they deliver until 2AM during the week and 3AM on weekends.

The yellow, green and red curries are all delicious, as is the pad thai. The sushi rolls are not gigantic but what they lack in size they make up for in taste. Great lunch specials, too.

Re: “For the Left, the Civil War must be just about slavery

Oh, yeah: I'm from Louisville, Kentucky....I just have to acknowledge the fact that I already think you're in league with the devil.

Re: “For the Left, the Civil War must be just about slavery

"For progressives, the ever-increasing power of the federal government represents human liberation and political liberalization — period. This has been the Left's clarion call from FDR to Barack Obama, and any talk of relinquishing centralized power — even in the name of what would typically be considered liberal causes — is heresy."

Dear Jack Hunter,

Do you have any respect at all for fact? Your particular brand of historical revisionism, cloaked as it is in pretension and "authority," is especially repugnant. But do you really think these things? Come on.... Really?

You really sound like a fool in the passage above. Yes, FDR greatly expanded the role of the federal government following the Great Depression (25% unemployment rates, anyone?) through Social Security, public works, the minimum wage, etc. You know, Jack, if you had been a young man during the 1930s - a middling columnist living in Charleston, South Carolina - YOU would have probably been in the vanguard of the New Deal coalition! Southern whites voted for FDR - all 4 times - in overwhelming numbers. They were the single largest subgroup to benefit from New Deal programs.

So when you make the past 80 years - from "FDR to Obama" - seem like some natural continuum, are you just ignoring the fact that one ENORMOUS political realignment happened in between? Oh, yes, I remember now. The major issue - the one that drove Southern whites out of the Democratic Party - was enforced integration, or, as you might call it, "forced desegregation," or an abrogation of your Constitutional rights. Of course, just like this Civil War debate you are so fond of, this issue is also one of carefully selected euphemisms on the part of white racists.

Yes, in the Civil War, slavery was not THE only issue, just as in the battle to desegregate Southern schools, racism was not the sole reason why parents, Citizen's Councils, and a whole host of other bureaucrats and state administrators refused to desegregate schools (Thank God for Porter-Gaud and Ashley Hall, right?).

But WITHOUT slavery, the civil war wouldn't have been fought. And WITHOUT rampant racism, the battle to desegregate the South wouldn't have lasted some thirty years after Brown v. Board. You can make the arguments you want to make, of course. You just have to accept that your reasoning (which, as previously stated, needs some tinkering anyway) positions you with racists.

Can we grow up? As the supposed cosmopolitan bastion of South Carolina, perhaps we should try to use our heads and cool it with the Civil War hokum. Stop your foolish demagoguery, Jack Hunter!

Re: “Black Bean Co. injects fresh energy into the food scene

I ordered the green beach burrito with extra rice and beans (because I heard the portions can be small) and with a side of spicy green goddess dressing (because I don't need my food to be TOO healthy) and it was amazing! The pasta salad was great, although tiny. I got my food delivered and it was here within 20 minutes. I will be going back to Black Bean Company!
