Blackwater Ukulele Festival

When: Sat., Sept. 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 2014
Phone: (843) 553-0515
Price: $10
There may have been a time in our lives when we thought ukuleles were just tiny guitars for tykes. People would learn to play on them before graduating to the real deal. Of course, we later found out that they weren’t — sigh. Celebrate the small, stringed instrument at an all-day festival at Cypress Gardens on Saturday with live performances, workshops, an open-mic session, and hula dancing. The fest kicks off at 10:30 a.m., but the gates open at 9 a.m., giving uke-lovers 90 minutes to explore the grounds before the first ukulele workshop. The Hula Sisters, Charleston Hot Shots, Nathan Miller, Sarrah Summer, and the V-Tones are all scheduled to perform. But uke players will have their chance to showcase their talents during the 3:30 p.m. open mic session — just follow their two rules: be kind to small children and be sure to have at least one ukulele in the act. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. No pets allowed.
