Don’t judge Bistro Toulouse by its strip mall exterior. Follow the chalkboard inside to find a warm bistro that excels in classic regional French dishes like cassoulet, crepes with duck confit, salad Lyonnaise, mussels in truffle cream, and escargots. As with any French venue worth its weight in foie gras, the desserts here are magnifique, particularly the lavender crème brulee, and the dark chocolate soufflé with Grand Marnier crème anglaise (just be sure to order the soufflé ahead, as it takes a little time). Weekends bring brunch beignets drizzled with bourbon syrup, pain perdu, and braised pork hash with hollandaise, or you can just pop in to sip vino at the bar, nibble on a charcuterie/cheese board, and watch epicurean shows on the flatscreen above. It’s sophisticated food in an unpretentious environment. —Allston McCrady (Dish, Summer 2018)
