Big Gay Beach Day

When: Sat., June 4, 12-5 p.m. 2011
Price: Free
The name “Big Gay Beach Day” really says it all, doesn’t it? And they’re not exaggerating when they say big — last year’s event had 500 people. But the Charleston Area Mpowerment Project (CHAMP), who hosts the event, wants to remind people that it is open to everyone beyond the gay community as well. The day will include a sand-sculpting competition, a lube slip n’ slide, live music from a DJ, and there’ll be a volleyball net set up for anyone who wants to play. It all wraps up with a men-vs.-women tug of war, which got so intense last year that the rope broke. “It’s a great chance to come out to the beach, enjoy some great music, and to participate in some fun activities in an open and supportive environment,” says CHAMP Coordinator Nicholas Reigle. Meet up with the group near the empty lot on the 1600 block of East Ashley Avenue. For more info, e-mail
