Between the Buried and Me w/ Cynic, Devin Townsend, and Scale the Summit

If 2007’s Colors weren’t proof enough, then last year’s The Great Misdirect settled it once and for all. Between the Buried and Me is so over metalcore. The band hasn’t lost its affinity for blast beats and growls, and it hasn’t shed its death metal riffs, either. But now, those are elements of a larger construction which relies much more heavily on the band’s progressive rock influences. Granted, guessing that the members of BTBAM might dig King Crimson wasn’t a great leap in logic — they’ve always employed a wide dynamic range, virtuosic musicianship, and an ear for complex melody. But until Colors and The Great Misdirect affirmed the band’s directional shift, the songs felt limited; they couldn’t prawl in the same way they do now, into Euro-metal, Queen-like theatricality and the spacious sprawling prog of King Crimson and Gentle Giant. Today’s BTBAM is bigger and better than ever. —Bryan Reed
