Best Web-Based Literary Mag

Dark Sky

The newspaper industry is slowly waking up to a future that's not in print — it's online. If mainstream media is slow, imagine the sluggish pace of literary journals (most, like, say, The Paris Review, are quarterly). This gives you an idea of how much Charleston poet and writer Kevin Murphy is on the vanguard. As co-founder of Dark Sky, Murphy has for the past five months offered a weekly helping of arty fare that's easily consumed in one sitting: one work of short fiction, one poem, one photograph, one work of art, and one film review. Contributors include poets, artists, and writers from around the region and the world. There's even a cartoonist called Dr. Muffins (it's better left to the eye of the beholder). Murphy, a graduate of the MFA program at Emerson College in Boston and a visual arts critic for City Paper, gets about 60 stories and 100 poems a month.
