Best Way to Get Shaken and Stirred

CSO Bond concert

Staff Pick

Either Stuart Malina is a big Ian Fleming fan or he did a heckuva lot of research before conducting October’s Charleston Pops concert. It was devoted to “Bond, James Bond,” and Malina regaled the audience with spot-on behind-the-movies info between famous numbers from the franchise. Malina may have broken his vodka martini glass mid-concert, but he wasn’t the least bit shaken. The Charleston Symphony Orchestra ably handled composer John Barry’s sweeping strings and intense rhythms. Singer Hilary Kole didn’t struggle a jot with Shirley Bassey’s brassy numbers, “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are Forever.” The selection ran the gamut from well-known ’60s scores like “From Russia with Love” to John Altman’s tank chase tune from “Goldeneye.” It was the kind of accessible evening that was perfect for orchestral music lovers and a chance for film fans to reminisce.
