Best School Board Exit

Mary Ann Taylor

Staff Pick

When the school board started talking about giving itself a raise, Mary Ann Taylor decided she'd had enough. In explaining her sudden departure from the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees in November, Mary Ann Taylor said she had been frustrated for a lot of reasons since taking office in November 2010, but the board's proposal to increase its own pay from $25 per meeting to $15,000 a year was what pushed her over the edge. "The vast majority of the board has no interest in doing what's best for the children of Charleston County, only in promoting their own personal interests," Taylor said. "As a lifelong classroom teacher holding a principal's certification, I can no longer be a part of a board committed to helping themselves rather than educating our children." After 14 applicants volunteered to fill her shoes, Gov. Nikki Haley appointed West Ashley parent Brian Thomas to take Taylor's empty seat Feb. 22, restoring the nine-seat board to full force and hopefully putting an end to the tie votes that had been plaguing board meetings since Taylor's departure.
