Best Restaurant Rehab

The Westendorff

Staff Pick

For years, the building at the corner of St. Philip and Warren streets sat decaying. A former hardware store, at one time the roof had caved in, and it was molding from the inside out. In fact, when architect Julia Martin toured it with owner Steven Niketas, she fell through the floor and had to wear a boot. But a lot of love and care and years of work finally revealed a restoration as worthy of praise as the forthcoming Gibbes remodel. It helps that the diner’s food isn’t shabby either. Chef Blake Joyal is preparing dishes like a Kurobuto pork porterhouse and strozzapreti. Pair that with a Paloma, and you’ve got Tuesday night done right. —Kinsey Gidick
