Shepard Fairey’s Andre the Giant mural

Staff Pick

Like a sad-eyed Big Brother, Fairey’s massive Obey Giant image looked down on the city from its post atop the Francis Marion Hotel for almost three months last summer. It was part of the Halsey exhibit The Insistent Image: Recurrent Motifs in the Art of Shepard Fairey and Jasper Johns, which featured a gallery’s worth of new paintings and prints by Fairey, as well as five outdoor pieces (four murals and an installation). As far as the art goes, our favorite outdoor piece had to be the massive mural on one of the walls by Butcher & Bee, “Enjoy Power and Glory While They Last.” But the striking black-and-white giant face really took the cake. Just imagine what he saw nightly on Upper King Street. —Elizabeth Pandolfi
