King Cake

Staff Pick

It’s only expected that Charlestonians would borrow fried shrimp po boys and even beignets from New Orleans, but how did King Cake, that traditional Mardi Gras nibble, suddenly become a thing? It started popping up at the Mardi Gras celebration a few years back at The Glass Onion, whose owners hail from New Orleans. Now all of a sudden everyone seems to be demanding the traditional Crescent City treat. A misshapen ring of cinnamon-laced dough tarted up with garish yellow, green, and purple-dyed frosting and sugar, and a little plastic baby Jesus tucked away somewhere inside just waiting to crack a filling for one “lucky” diner? Some things we should save for visits to New Orleans.
