Best Reason to Fear for the Future of Johns Island

Stupid Sports Illustrated writers complaining about the bad roads

Staff Pick

If the Concerned Citizens of the Sea Islands — the opponents of bringing I-526 to Johns Island and constructing a parkway across the rural area — were regular readers of Sports Illustrated, chances are they canceled their subscriptions in 2012. In August, Senior SI sports writer Gary Van Sickle wrote that the PGA Championship coming to Kiawah “proves that majors can go anywhere,” but he called out the “one long road in” that’s “an hour from anywhere” leading to the golf course. Kiawah residents and other drivers eager for a quicker route to and from the island have used those sort of comments as fodder for their argument to continue to add road infrastructure to Johns Island. But what does Van Sickle know? He probably sat in traffic on Bohicket Road fingering his iPhone and busily making ranting phone calls about being late because of traffic. He and everyone else needs to slow down. Bohicket and River Roads are beautiful. When all of Kiawah and Seabrook’s current property owners moved there, the roads looked like they do now, or worse. If you’re going to sit in traffic somewhere, they’re a hell of a lot better than a four-lane highway, and once you build one of those there will be more traffic. Or, if what you want is to live in an enclave reached by a four-lane highway without traffic, move your lame ass to Hilton Head.
