Moe's Crosstown Tavern

Downtown. 714 Rutledge Ave. 722-3287

While some dining establishments might consider the label "pub food" an insult, Moe's Crosstown Tavern has turned the two words into a mouth-watering phrase that would have impressed Pavlov himself. Not only is the Hampton Park-area neighborhood hangout a great bar, they serve, as Samuel L. Jackson's Jules Winnfield might put it, "some serious gourmet shit." We're talking hand-cut french fries; sauces made from scratch; a superfly BLT loaded with pesto mayo, fried green tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella cheese; burgers topped with roasted poblano peppers and goat cheese; and the crispiest, most savory onion rings in town. The space was once home to Jimmy Dengate's back when it was members-only, but these days anyone can stop by for a pint and a nosh -- diners will find the place especially vibrant on Tuesday nights, well-known to locals as half-price burger night. Get there early if you require a table and chairs for your burger consumption; the small room fills up fast with diners eyeing anyone with the gall to stick around after they've cleaned their plates, and trust us, you don't want to get between a hungry Moe's regular and his rightfully earned Tuesday-night table.
