Ending 40 years as the mayor of Charleston, Joseph P. Riley Jr. managed to go out as a leading forward-thinker in the minds of many locals. After guiding the city through a year that included shocking tragedy and natural disasters during his final term in office, the former mayor shows no signs of slowing down. With development of the International African-American Museum as his primary focus, Riley continues his efforts to promote the complete history of Charleston and all of its people. While most people would probably enjoy a relaxing retirement after four decades at the helm of a city, Riley isn’t one to rest on his laurels because he knows there is still work to be done.
