Best Pork Belly

Hong Sho Ro at Lee Lee’s Hot Kitchen

Staff Pick

To be honest, we’re pretty tired of pork belly. It shows up everywhere (even in salad), and it’s so not good for us. But it’s hard to pass up at Lee Lee’s, where they rub it down in five-spice powder, perhaps the best thing Chinese food has going for it. Too often, Chinese fare is bland and gloopy, but five-spice is a perfect balance of big flavors with star anise, cloves, sichuan pepper, fennel seed, and cinnamon. The slow-cooked pork belly comes out richly flavored and delicious. Sure it’s fatty and greasy, but it’s pork belly and that’s what makes it good, right? And if you’re going to eat it, you might as well eat a big plate of it.
