The Medical University of South Carolina made the news recently when the state House passed a budget setting aside $25 million for its children’s hospital. The budget hasn’t been approved by the Senate yet, but lately the children’s hospital has been getting a lot of love, including $500,000 from South Carolina Electric & Gas, 70 donated iPads from Google, and a big fundraising push from hometown hero Darius Rucker. MUSC generates a lot of goodwill in the community, and with good reason: The hospital serves patients from the tri-county area and beyond, and its doctors are involved in cutting-edge research on topics including Alzheimer’s and telemedicine techniques that could save lives in remote rural areas. The hospital and the school do a lot of good for the Lowcountry, and apparently they do well by their employees too.
