Best New Waterfront Park

Shem Creek Park

Staff Pick

In October, the Town of Mt. Pleasant celebrated the opening of the beautiful and scenic Shem Creek Park, a project that had been in the works for years. The crews did a fine job of constructing a small entrance facility (just off of Coleman Boulevard and Shrimp Boat Lane) and a handsome 2,200-foot boardwalk that runs along the west side of Shem Creek, deep into the marsh toward Charleston Harbor. Despite its close proximity to the Shem Creek Inn and Vickery's, the boardwalk has a remote and private feel. It's a peaceful stroll with plenty of room and several benches, a miniature island, and comfortable stopping points along the way. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. If the town's huge Memorial Waterfront Park along the Cooper and Wando rivers is a windy, bustling scene with tourists, fishermen, and families running around, Shem Creek Park is a breezy, local, laid-back alternative.
