Best New Bluegrass Jamboree

Edisto Island Bluegrass Festival

Staff Pick

South Carolina already has a few great bluegrass spots. In West Columbia, there’s the venerable old Bill’s Pickin’ Parlor. Santee has Lone Star Barbecue & Mercantile. But what about the Charleston area? The organizers of the first-ever Edisto Island Bluegrass Fest may have found the answer to that question. Down on the riverfront on a long patch of grass surrounded by woods, bluegrass pickers spent a full day showing off their chops on banjo, mandolin, bass, and guitar. The fest showcased local acts including Bluestone Ramblers, Flatt City, and the Blue Plantation Band, along with top-of-the-line national bands like Lonesome River Band and Frank Solivan & the Dirty Kitchen Band. But the real kicker was a band that can hardly be called bluegrass at all: Charleston’s own Shovels & Rope, who added a young and rowdy element to the usual crowd of older bluegrass heads.
