Best Music Venue to Be Replaced by an Apple Store (Or Something)

301 King St.

The longtime music venue and hip downtown hangout Cumberland's — celebrated home of the one-dollar mystery beer and Monday night heavy metal karaoke — is terribly missed. Its final weeks in business in December were a sad tale. Owner/manager Sinan Raouf and longtime booking agent Johnny Puke tried hard to keep the club open. Due to difficulties and tangles with a complicated lease arrangement, they just couldn't make it happen. They did, however, leave a legacy and a reputation as one of the most diligent and supportive live music venues in Charleston. For over 15 years, Cumberland's featured rock, punk, ska, indie, and jam bands — local and national acts. Word has it that Apple and other high-tech retail shops are considering moving into the vacant King Street space. No matter who sets up shop, they won't offer a smidge of the wild fun and local personality of Cumberland's.
