Best Moratorium that Never Was

Hotel Moratorium

Staff Pick

Following heated debate over the late-night bar ban and gathering place zoning, moratorium has become a four-letter word for Charleston City Council. So when it came time for newly elected Mayor John Tecklenburg to make good on his campaign promise for a yearlong halt on new hotels on the peninsula, it’s understandable that city officials were nervous regarding the proposed ban. Once the moratorium was set to come to a vote in the form of a new ordinance, it was pulled from council’s agenda at the last minute in favor of conducting a study into the effect that the city’s growing number of hotels was having on the peninsula. The investigation is still ongoing, and a possible moratorium of some sort isn’t completely out of the picture. But in the meantime, Charleston’s thriving hotel industry is still growing. —Dustin Waters
