Best Moment in the Spotlight for Local Gospel Singers

The Gospel at Colonus

Staff Pick

The Gospel at Colonus was a huge part of Spoleto Festival USA 2011, giving a gospel spin to the Greek tragedy Oedipus at Colonus. The award-winning production brought together the voices of soul and gospel legends like the Blind Boys of Alabama, Jevetta Steele, and Bernardine Mitchell. But local fans were buzzing about the familiar faces on stage. Producers visited local churches to select the perfect choir, and they settled on the voices of Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston. The singers did a great job bringing a heavenly noise to the Gaillard.
