After the Confederate flag was removed from Statehouse grounds last July, the question for lawmakers became “What do we do with this thing now?” followed by “And how can we inconvenience taxpayers the most?” The answer came in December when consultants proposed spending $5.3 million of taxpayer money on a museum display for the controversial flag. When the initial estimate drew harsh criticism, the Confederate Relic Room and Military Commission cut the cost to $3.6 million for a plan that includes expanding the current facility and creating a digital display featuring South Carolina soldiers.
