Best Local Blog

Ida Becker's Society Blog

Ida Becker's Society Blog (

It's quite possible that City Paper readers don't care much about blogs. The total number of votes in this category was about equal to the turnout at a summertime PTA meeting and our own very active blog gets a smattering of visitors each day.

For the record: Webster's New Millennium Dictionary of English has the following entry for 'blog'

Part of Speech: Noun

Definition: An online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page; also called weblog

Example: Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author.

Etymology: Shortened form of weblog

Usage: blog, blogged, blogging (v), blogger (n)

The active Charleston blogroll at Lowcountryblogs, begun by techie and P&C reporter Dan Conover, currently lists 138 local blogs. They range from amateur reviews of local restaurants and cuisine to angry ruminations on the School District, from meteorological blogs by television weather reporters to media blogs from local print reporters (like the CP's Back Channel and Spoleto Buzz Blog). There are dedicated Charleston bloggers typing maniacally every hour of the day, every day of the week, about photography, politics, religion, parenting, binge drinking, the music scene, college, comedy, surfing, science, local history, tourism, programming, healthcare, community, poetry, Christianity, dentistry, hedgehogs, and a hundred other topics, including other blogs.

In Ida Becker's Society Blog for Charleston Magazine, updated about once a week, the society editor (and former 'Scene' contributor for the City Paper) posts photos of people at fancy parties accompanied by her professional take on the swanky events that leaves no compliment undelivered, no purse uncritiqued, and no name undropped. Congratulations Ida, but here's hoping for a tougher race for Best Local Blog in '08.
