While most of the members had performed on the same stage last spring as part of the newly established Jazz Artists of Charleston's (JAC) dazzling South Carolina Hit Parade concert, the 20-piece Charleston Jazz Orchestra made its official debut in November at the Charleston Music Hall with an elegant program of Duke Ellington pieces. Standing (and bouncing) in front of the tuxedo-clad ensemble was trumpeter and conductor Charlton Singleton, a longtime Charleston music figure who co-organized the event with the JAC's Jack McCray. "This big band is the new kid on the jazz scene block," McCray boasted in his on-stage introduction. "And Charlton is our Duke Ellington." He was right.
