This may be a wildly optimistic statement, but 2017 promises to be a great year for lunch in Charleston. The main reason for this is Workshop, which opens in the Neck area in late April. The so-called ‘fancy food court’ promises modest kitchen space for culinary start-ups without the overhead of hanging out your own shingle. That means that brisket master John Lewis can tinker with tamales (Juan Luis), local food trucks can try work on solid ground (Pink Bellies), and other ambitious chefs can start cooking ASAP. With short-term stints available, we’re excited about the potential for new flavors to blow into town and invade our lunch hour. Workshop is just one of the new additions that’s come with the new Pacific Box and Crate development on King Street Extension, but it’s probably safe to assume there’s more to come in that growing area of town. —Sam Spence
