Best Homecoming

Ron Free

Staff Pick

Elderly jazz drummer Ron Free was a be-bop guy featured in The Jazz Loft Project, a terrific new book by Sam Stephenson. Free, a Charlestonian, jammed, recorded, and resided at the famously bohemian Loft in lower Manhattan in the late 1950s. Now based in Virginia, he came full-circle last June, performing with the Charleston All-Stars at Upstairs at McCrady's, the Jazz Artists of Charleston's 13-night jazz series during last year's Piccolo Spoleto. What a snazzy, jazzy homecoming gig.
