Judge Condon Takes Gay Marriage Applications

Staff Pick

On Oct. 8, 2014, Charleston County Probate Judge Irvin G. Condon accepted a marriage license application from a same-sex couple, setting off a chain of events that ultimately led to the legalization of gay marriage in South Carolina. Of course, conservatives didn’t go down without a fight. On Oct. 9, Attorney General Alan Wilson got the state Supreme Court to order a halt on the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples. After a few more lawsuits and last-ditch efforts by Wilson, marriage equality became the law of the land on Nov. 20.
