Best Gun Control Debacle

Charleston County’s Assault Weapons Ban

Readers Pick

Members of Charleston County Council jumped the gun a bit when considering a resolution that would call for a ban on semi-automatic, high-capacity magazine weapons. While council members originally supported the effort, with only two councilmen abstaining from the vote, the push for the resolution soon floundered. After word got out about the resolution, Council Chairman Elliott Summey pumped the brakes on his support, declaring that he owns “a pile of guns.” Summey explained that he thought the resolution called for the ban on fully automatic machine guns. With the gun debate coming down to an issue of semantics, county officials’ chance to make a strong statement on gun control tanked. —Dustin Waters
