Walking down John Street has long been synonymous with grabbing a cone at Paolo’s, and that’s because the gelato shop is one of the best in Charleston. Italian Paolo Dalla Zorza has been running the little shop since 2003 and been making dozens of sweet tooths happy in the process with his authentic pistacchio, crema, fragola (strawberry), and more. The great irony is that the little gelato shop is really just part of Dalla Zorza’s empire. According to the Post & Courier, the gelato man discovered a huge U.S. market for Italian plastic cups and tasting spoons which he imports and sells to Disney, Sysco, and Royal American Cruises under his Gelato Supply Co. Who knew such a tiny sweet treat could be such big business?
