Tattooed Moose

Readers Pick

Twenty-three tons. That’s how many potatoes Tattooed Moose went through last year making their famous duck fat fries. Now with three locations (Citadel Mall’s Moose opened May 2018), there are decadent baskets available in graffiti-laden spots downtown, West Ashley, and Johns Island. You can play it straight and order a basket with homemade garlic aioli, or really commit with the fries and bowl of gravy or roasted garlic and bleu cheese fries. “People go gaga for them,” says Moose co-owner Mike Kulick. “One time shortly after we opened — I think it was during one of the first Wine + Food festivals — Sean Brock was in there with a bunch of high-powered chefs, and had some Michelin star Italian chef. He dragged him up to the Moose to eat those bleu cheese french fries. That was really cool.”

Kulick says he and his wife/co-owner of the Moose, Jen, discovered the beauty of frying potatoes in duck fat at Voodoo, another one of their establishments. “We’ve been making duck confit since we opened Voodoo, and every time you make a batch of confit you have all this excess duck fat,” says Kulick. “We started putting it in the fryer because it makes everything taste good.”

We always get the burger when we visit, even though the Duck Club is a must-order for anyone just getting hip to the Tattooed treats. It pairs best with the bleu cheese fondue-drenched fries, and a cold one. When asked if he, after almost a decade of duck fat fries, ever gets sick of eating them, Kulick laughs. “No! I can dip those things in garlic mayo and never get tired.” —Mary Scott Hardaway
