Best Film Fest Award Winner

Grainger David

Staff Pick

The world knows a little more about Wadmalaw Island thanks to Grainger David. The Princeton and NYU-educated filmmaker got a lot of international attention last year with his short film The Chair, about a scary sci-fi outbreak of poisonous mold on a Lowcountry island. David wrote the screenplay while living on Wadmalaw after grad school, and its people and landscapes heavily influenced the project. The Chair went on to win the Short Film Jury Award at 2012’s South By Southwest festival and was screened in the Festival de Cannes, the only American film to be accepted into the shorts competition. It will finally have a local screening at the Charleston International Film Festival (Wed. April 24 at 9 p.m. at the Sottile). And while David relocated to California last summer, we’re proud to call him a local boy. Keep an eye out for his next project, The Edge of the Woods, starring Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka. It was shot in the Midlands and was funded by a grant from the S.C. Film Commission.
