Steel Pulse at the Southern Ground Festival

Staff Pick

Georgia-based country-rock group the Zac Brown Band helped assemble an eclectic mix of bands for its three-day Southern Ground Music & Food Festival on Daniel Island last October. While the roster was fairly diverse — ranging from funk and reggae to alternative rock and blues — the cultural vibes on the field were overtly Southern, collegiate, and white. It was funny watching attendees clad in Zac Brown shirts and "Southern pride" hats eat barbecue and drink Landshark beer while veteran U.K. reggae band Steel Pulse's dreadlocked frontman David Hinds shouted out for Jah, the Old Testament, and African brethren who suffered European colonization in the 19th century. The cultural gap was evident, but not distracting. The local rednecks and hippies seemed to groove to the band's beat despite the Biblical references and fiery shout-outs.
