Best City Council Showdown

Moody’s Gambit

Staff Pick

There’s nothing like a bike lane to get people to come out in droves to a city council meeting. After it seemed that Charleston officials had finally settled the debate over the West Ashley bridge bike lane — at least as far as the city was concerned — Councilman Bill Moody made the political play of the year. Combing through the city’s rules governing council votes, Moody questioned whether the vote cast by a City Council member over the phone should count. We christened this move Moody’s Gambit. If he had been successful, the effort to reaffirm Charleston City Council’s support of the bike lane would have been dealt a major setback. Ultimately, you’ve got to hand it to Moody. He’ll fight like hell for what he believes in. —Dustin Waters
