Best Cheesy Rock Cover

Hit or Miss

Staff Pick

The versatile rock/groove duo of singer/guitarist Joel Timmons and guitarist/trombonist Ward Buckheister, both of Charleston rock ensemble Sol Driven Train, head off in unpredictable directions whenever they appear as the duo Hit or Miss. During a typical set, Timmons will switch between acoustic guitar, pedal-mounted tambourine, cajon, and banjo, while Buckheister plucks a Fender Telecaster, taps a small bass drum, and blasts occasional solos on an old trombone. The set lists are a wild mix, from groove-heavy originals to clever renditions of John Prine, Avett Brothers, and Paul Simon songs. They nail Toto's "Africa," too — the rhythm, the harmonies, and the cheesy vibes. It's a fan fave and a guilty pleasure.
